Go on, admit it. You’ve always wanted to get married in style, and a 6,700-square-foot French chateau sounds pretty stylish. No, we’re not going to send you off to Fontainebleau. Instead, we’re going to tell you about a place which, if not precisely the real thing, is a convincingly European grand manor located at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains.

We’re talking about Chateau Bradbury in Monrovia, a stunner of an estate that offers a regal and private setting for weddings and receptions. Designed by Robert Farquhar, the chief architect of Washington’s Pentagon, this three-story French Normandy mansion was built in 1912 for $85,000, an incredible amount of moolah in those days. The ambitious budget was well spent.

At the entrance an imposing gate swings open to a suitably long carriageway, culminating in a large, circular driveway in front of the manor house. Inside the circle, under the spreading branches of an enormous tree, is a formal French parterre of four triangular flower beds edged with boxwood hedges. The chateau is a stately red brick structure with a slate-gray, steeply sloping roof punctuated by dormer windows. Forest green 25-foot cypresses touch the eaves, framing sets of French doors and windows, and two acres of landscaped grounds surround the house.

Although you and your guests can use most interior areas of the first and second floors of the manor house, Chateau Bradbury is primarily an outdoor venue. There are various areas for a ceremony—beneath one of the century-old trees or under the front door awning, for example. Tables for garden receptions can be set up almost anywhere. Popular choices are the formal garden patio, which features a beautiful, 50-foot horse chestnut tree, and the expansive lawns in the front, facing the chateau’s impressive façade. The Pentagon may be more famous, but when it comes to style, Chateau Bradbury has it in spades.
